FAQs

Welcome to our FAQ where we have tried to answer the most common questions.

Installation and Setup Instructions

General

What types of drum samples do you provide?

We provide multi-layered round robin drum samples—high-resolution recordings designed to capture the natural dynamics and subtle variations of a real drummer. These samples include:

- Multiple velocity layers for expressive dynamic response

- Round robin variations to avoid robotic repetition

- Multi-mic recordings (e.g., close, overhead, room) for full mixing flexibility

Note: We do not offer pre-mixed one-shot samples.

One-shot drum samples are individual audio files that capture a single hit or strike of a drum, percussion, or electronic drum sound. Each file represents one isolated sound.

Are your samples Raw or Processed?

Most of our samples are processed so they are ready to be added to your mix!

In 2025 we will start to include the raw files as well as the processed files - if they are included this will be noted on the product.

Supported Platforms

Do you support SSD 5.5?

We don't offer support for SSD5.5 but you might be able to load third party samples (WAV) into it if you have the full version. Please see the official tutorial here: https://support.stevenslatedrums.com/hc/en-us/articles/4403633569559-How-To-Add-3rd-Party-Samples-In-SSD5-5-To-Create-Your-Own-Kit

Can I use Just Add Drums samples in Logic Sampler?

Yes, with limitations:

Currently, we offer one pack — Sound Like When The Levee Breaks — that includes custom Logic presets, making it easy to get started right away in Logic Pro.

The rest of our packs don't yet include Logic-specific presets, but we're actively working on adding them. In the meantime, you can still take full advantage of our high-quality WAV samples by creating your own presets using Logic’s Sampler or Drum Machine Designer.

If you prefer a plug-and-play experience, many of our packs are also compatible with Slate Trigger and Kontakt Player, which offer full multi-mic support and enhanced functionality.

How do I use your samples in Superior Drummer 3?

We don't natively support Superior Drummer 3 as the current version only allows for the integration of third-party drum samples as one-shots. Unfortunately, it doesn't support loading the full velocity and round-robin layers included in our packs.

How do I use your drum samples with my Electronic Kit?

To use our sample libraries with electronic drum kits, the best approach is to use your kit as a MIDI controller. Depending on your setup and experience level, you have a few different options:

Slate Trigger 2

You can connect your e-drum kit as a MIDI controller and use it to trigger samples via Slate Trigger 2. Please note that you'll need the full version of Slate Trigger 2 to use our libraries. This setup is ideal for responsive triggering and high-quality playback in both live and studio environments.

Kontakt

Another option is to use Kontakt as your sample playback engine. As with Slate Trigger 2, your e-drum kit acts as a MIDI controller. Two of our libraries — Sound Like Nevermind and Sound Like Around the Fur — are available for Kontakt Player, so they don’t require any additional licensing. All other libraries, however, require the full version of Kontakt. This setup offers a high level of control and flexibility.

One-Shots

This is the most popular option and you can load our one-shot drum samples directly onto your electronic drum kit.

We currently only have one library that is available in one-shot format - Sound Like When The Levee Breaks. We're actively working behind the scenes to release one-shot versions of all our drum sample packs. These will offer the most streamlined way to integrate our sounds into any e-drum module or hardware sampler.

WAV Samples

If you're an advanced user, you can also load the WAV samples directly onto your e-drum module. However, our libraries are built with individual velocity layers and separate microphone channels, which allow for deep customization. You will need to import the WAV files into your DAW, mix them into your preferred one-shot samples, and then load those into your drum module or software sampler.

Kontakt

Kontakt Full vs. Kontakt Player: What's the Difference?

Kontakt Full (Native Instruments Kontakt) is the complete (paid) version of the software sampler. It allows you to load and edit any third-party or custom sample libraries, use advanced scripting, and access the full range of features for sound design.

Kontakt Player is a free version that only works with officially licensed "Kontakt Player" libraries. It cannot load non-Player libraries unless they are in demo mode with time limitations.

If a library requires Kontakt Full, you’ll need to purchase the full version to use it without restrictions. If it’s labeled Kontakt Player, it will work in the free version.

How do I register and install your Kontakt Player Libraries?

Installing and registering your Kontakt Player library is done in Native Access.

Click here for video installation instructions.

Can I use the Kontakt Instruments with my electric drum kit?

Yes you can! Our Kontakt Instruments support CC4 MIDI data for Hi-Hat control.

Why does Kontakt display the word DEMO in red once I’ve loaded the instrument?

If you’re seeing the word “Demo” in Kontakt, it means you’re trying to run a Just Add Drums instrument that was designed for the full version of Kontakt—not the free Kontakt Player.

How do I change the MIDI notes in Kontakt?

All of our Kontakt Instruments have a fixed MIDI mapping to General MIDI.

WAV & Slate Trigger

How do I use the WAV files?

These are individual WAV files which you can add to any sampler you choose. We have given you all of the channels, velocity layers and round robins separately for maximum customisation.

How do I use the Trigger files?

These are .TCI files for use in Slate Trigger 2. You will need the full of Slate Trigger 2 in order to use these drum samples. The free versions of Slate Trigger 2 doesn't allow the loading of third party samples.
